Senior Housing Options in Retirement

by Ellen Li, MSBA, CFP® on 10/28/2011

As baby boomers reach retirement age, many start to wonder what housing options they may have if their health deteriorates.  To ensure that you and your loved ones maintain a good quality of life, it is important to start the conversation early and plan ahead. What follows are a few important points I took away from Stephen Maag’s presentation on “The Landscape of Senior Housing Options” at the 2011 FPA Experience conference.  Stephen described the array of housing options for seniors, and suggested services that may be valuable to many families.

A Variety of Options

There are a variety of services available to seniors – from assisted living to retirement communities and beyond - each with a different purpose and cost. We put together a chart of Senior Housing Options to help you understand the landscape.

Plan Early or Work with a Pro

When you look at the Senior Housing Options chart, you will notice there are many factors to consider.  Trying to make the right choice for yourself or your loved one may be overwhelming during times of stress.

One suggestion from Mr. Magg  is to  hire a professional such as  a Geriatric Care Manager - a health and human services specialist - who can help to find the best health care services available within the family’s budget. Keep in mind that care managers can offer valuable services even to people who decide to stay at home.   For more information, visit  The Naitonal Association of Professional Geriatirc Care Managers or The Case Management Society of America .

If you need help to evaluate your situation, don’t hesistate to call us. We will help you plan and find the right professional if necessary.
